Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background and problem discussion: Earning announcements is one of the few events whose timing can be secured in the financial markets. According to previous research, the period around announcements usually leads to different types of market reactions. For instance, a positive trend of share prices and volumes prior to this event. However, a consensus regarding the trait of these market reactions has not been reached.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze whether there is a correlation between trading volumes and share prices during the period before and after the publication of quarterly reports. The analysis is based on the ten firms with the largest market value of Stockholm OMXS30 during the period 2014 - 2019.

Method: This study was based on a quantitative research method with a deductive approach. Three hypotheses were derived from theories such as the effective market hypothesis, the attention-grabbing hypothesis, and previous empirical studies in the same field of research. These hypotheses were assessed with regression analyses regarding the period of 20 days before and 20 after earnings announcements.

Results and conclusions: The results show that the average share price rises throughout the observation period. In this study, a positively significant correlation between volume and price has been established before the publication of quarterly reports. The period after publication showed a negative significant correlation between the variables. Thus, the share price continued to rise despite the declining trading volumes.
