Abstract [en]

According to on-going debates from Riksdagen and research from different institutes like Finansinspektionen, young first-time property buyers struggle with their position and possibilities. Due to factors such as lack of work experience or financial assets young first-time buyers holds an unequal position on the housing market. The aim of this study is to make a comparative analysis of how young first-time property buyers experience and manage their room for maneuver in the housing market and how these experiences, actions and feelings can be connected to class and affect. The questions that this study wanted to answer was: How do young first-time buyers experience and express their room for maneuver in the housing market? How do young first-time buyers discuss the problems they encounter and strategies for these solutions? What emotions do young first-time buyers apply to their room of maneuver, the problems, and the solutions? How do they reason about factors that are important for the home purchase? The comparison was made between those who bought in Norrköping and those who bought in Stockholm. The results showed that young first-time property buyers needed to put their career on hold until they had completed their purchase. The result further showed that a lower housing price was an important factor. Saving for the down payment was a large obstacle that for many required a partner. Getting help from their parents to finance the down payment went against their principle of independence, even if it meant a longer time of saving. The choice of place was very important to be able to live a quiet and harmonious life. This meant that some places were actively selected. An urban norm was emphasized by those who bought in Stockholm. Finally lack of knowledge was a major previewed obstacle which created emotions in form of anxiety and nervousness.
