Abstract [en]
Voter turnout in Sweden is generally high both in the country and in municipalities but there are some large variations in the extent to which Swedes vote. The greatest variation in how high the voter turnout is in Sweden's largest cities.
The purpose of the study is to investigate how the ruling political majority in the City Council of the City of Stockholm works with democracy issues to increase the voter turnout.
Normative democratic theory is the theoretical perspective in the study. It is a qualitative document analysis, supplemented with email interviews. The interviews contain semi-structured questions for politicians in the municipal council, employees at the district administration and the election committee.
The study questions that are answered in the study are if and how the City of Stockholm worked with issues concerning democracy and turnout in the 2014, 2018 and 2022 parliamentary elections and whether the political government had any difference to what extent.
The results are that there is a difference in how the majority in 2014-2018 commissioned to work to increase the turnout in the city of Stockholm and that this was done to a greater extent during that term of office in comparison with 2010-2014 and 2018-2022.
