In today’s competitive market, design is an important element for the companies. They must succeed with delivering an increased value and an experience for the consumer to be able to survive. The Swedish company’s have become better in the design area, the higher standards the consumer’s demands forces the company to invest more in design. New products can’t be produced only to meet a demand, the expected interest in purchasing must be so strong that the willing to pay is sufficient.

It is important to use design effectively in the product development process to be able to give an increased value to the customer. When the consumers behavior and demand changes over time, it is important that a company has resources to identify the new demands. There are company’s that hasn’t realized how and when the design should enter in the product development process to make it more effective.

The study is performed on three different companies and their way of working to see what is important in the product development process to be able to give the consumer an increased value. The study is compared to the market research, when the purpose of this essay is to analyze and evaluate the product development process to see which company gives the consumer an increased value. The method used is called “Triangulating” because the use of both quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data was used in market research and compared with qualitative data from the interviews.

The research shows that the product development process is a complex process that requires co-ordination to be able to manage effectively. It is important that companies understand the consumers needs and constantly try to find out new needs through market research. To be able to meet the changing needs the company’s must get their products out on the market before their competitors does. A way to achieve that is by working team based. When a company works team based it needs the functions working together to create an increased value for the consumer. The element the company’s use to compete in the market is design, and it must be included in the product development process from the beginning and then follow all the way through.
