Abstract [en]
This paper is about how transport companies in the future will be able to adapt their activity to an environmentally sustainable development without the effect of negative company economic consequences. Today, the environmental threat is a global problem and knowledge about that effluent of carbon dioxide have a negative impact on the climate is generally known. A transport system that works well is important for Sweden, but the sector has a negative impact on the environment. Regulation and legislation for increased environmental requirements often meets resistance and fear that the work will be hampered by increased costs for environmental work that can lead to an international decrease in competitiveness. The transport companies have outside pressure from the society to do something about the environmental issue, however the companies’ customers are not ready to pay a higher price for environmental work. The transport companies stand before a dilemma, where they must find a way to combine the society's interests with their own for a long-term survival in the sector and the society's sustainable development.
The aim of this paper is through case study analyze, to evaluate big transport companies ' conditions for increased environmental work.
The survey shows that the customers evaluate the environment low and that the price is the crucial factor in their choice of transport company. The companies say that they say they work consistently on environmental issues but then tailored themselves to the customer that wants the lowest price. Also the transport companies evaluate environmental issues as a low priority. The companies are positive toward increased regulation around environment; so long it does not influence their international competitiveness.
The society, companies and customers all influence future environmental work. The result of this paper shows that there are no provisions for self initiated environmental work that form a sustainable development, when neither companies or costumers value the environment highly. The authors of this paper thereby think that a regulation of the environmental work is necessary from a sustainable environmental perspective. So that the regulations won’t have a negative impact on the companies’ probability, it is necessary that the regulations in the beginning are subsidized from State directions in order to compensate the increased costs for the transport companies.
