Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This paper strives to answer the question if, and how, male breastfeeding could challenge the current perceptions of masculinity. We want to analyse what masculinity consist of for the people expressing their views in this study, by looking at their thoughts of male breastfeeding. The different opinions concerning the subject is the focus of our analysis. By using theories about gender dichotomy, performativity and masculinity we can establish that male breastfeeding unfix masculinity and is therefore open for a possible change. The conclusion is that wether masculinity will be perceived as challenged or not, male breastfeeding depends on the context in which it is carried out, and by whom its is performed. However, this does not have to lead to the gender equality some are hoping for, if it results in a negotiation which strengthens the masculinity instead of evening out the biological differences.
