Abstract [en]

This study shows how swedish left-wing political press portrayed the Nazi movement in Germany, March 1933. The left political press is not often studied as press with more different political views, which can be seen expressed in their choice of news. There’s also research which shows how single newspapers, newspapers from different countries and newspapers from other cities portray the Nazi movement, but not as much regarding the left political press. This essay will contribute to the research in this area. The purpose of the study is to analyze how the different papers chose to portray themes such as: the labour movement in Germany, the Parliament election in Germany, antisemitism and Hitler/the Nazi Party (NSDAP). The study is based on material from the following papers: syndicalist Arbetaren, communist Ny Dag and the socialist SocialDemokraten. All papers are based in Stockholm. The articles that are being analyzed is found published on the front page of the paper. A total of 84 issues and 682 articles are analyzed. The study is done through a two-step analyze, first a quantitive analysis of what is being published in the different papers, followed by a qualitative analysis to analyze how it’s being analyzed. For the two-step analyze the framing theory will be applied. The study shows how there’s a difference in what the papers chose to publish on their front page during March 1933. Arbetaren and Ny Dag are focusing the most on the labour movement in their choice of news. Ny Dag does not report anything about antisemitism. Social-Demokraten is focusing on Hitler/NSDAP the most. The papers are very similar in how they chose to portray the themes but show some differences in what they chose to highlight in the articles.
