To Make the Complexity of Tolerance Visible. An overall purpose of this essay is to study the development of the term “tolerance”. I carry out a conceptual research and a historical background to this and I also try its significance towards certain experiences as a teacher. The purpose of my essay is to investigate how these experiences, in which some type of dilemma has arisen, serve as a tool for processing tolerance for me and others. This is done in the context of a teacher and as a companion in Erasmus + projects in Europe. The method is an autoethnographic and hermeneutic approach with three narrative descriptions as a starting point for reflection and analysis. Tolerance is discussed as virtue, as an educational tool and as a necessary interpersonal relationship in the situation of a democratic society. Empathy and play plays a role in tolerance.

Att synliggöra toleransens komplexitet. Ett övergripande syfte med denna essä är att studera utvecklingen av begreppet ”tolerans”. Jag genomför en begreppsforskning och en historisk bakgrund av densamma och dessutom prövar jag dess betydelse mot vissa erfarenheter som lärare. Syftet med min essä är att undersöka hur dessa upplevelser, där någon typ av dilemma uppstått, fungerar som redskap för att bearbeta tolerans för mig och andra. Detta sker i sammanhang som lärare och som följeslagare i Erasmus+ projekt i Europa. Metoden är ett autoetnografiskt och hermeneutiskt anslag med fem gestaltningar som utgångspunkt för reflektioner och analys. Tolerans diskuteras som dygd, som pedagogiskt redskap och som ett nödvändigt mellanmänskligt förhållande i situationen för ett demokratiskt samhälle. Empatiförmåga och leken spelar roll för tolerans.
