Problematic school absenteeism : A qualitative study of social workers' experiences about children and young people who do not go to school (English)
Abstract [en]

This study is a qualitative study that will examine the social workers experiences of children and young people in grades 7–9 with long-term school absence. With the help of von Wright's relational perspective, Antonovsky's salutogenic theory and SOC, the results have been analyzed. Previous research has focused on the problems from a school perspective and considered that, among other things, inadequate school environment and teacher support were the causes of school absenteeism. But also learning problems and that students saw the school as irrelevant to their future.

The study was conducted through four different qualitative interviews on persons active in the social services children's and youth unit. Using a hermeneutic method, the interviews have been interpreted to create an understanding of the interviewees' experiences. The result is presented in three main sections where, among other reasons, the reasons showed that diagnoses and lacking support from parents were the pervasive pattern everyone experienced. All interviewed hold similar perspectives on the reasons why children do not to go to school. These are different from previous research reported. Social workers' perspectives on how to meet and treat children in their work differ between each other emotionally, but also the commitment and relational thought to the child.
