Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine the experiences women soccer supporters socialization process and the socializations process continuation after they have adopted the supporteridentity. The majority of studies conducted in Sweden focuses on male supporterhip, studies on swedish women soccer supporters is particularly insufficient. Studies conducted outside of Sweden on female supporters is also limited and focuses to an extent on the gender perspective of women and mens experiences. By testing the results from chosen studies on women supporters socialization process, this study aims to find whether the same experiences can be found among swedish soccer supporters. Through Goffmans theories of the presentation of self and theories of stigmatisation, this essay aims to explain how swedish women supporters depicts the survival of their supporter identity. The empirical data was collected through four interviews with women who identify as active soccer supporters. The study uses an ethnomethodological approach and a qualitative data analysis. The key results this study presents are that women supporters initial socialization process acts almost in the same way as shown in earlier studies. The techniques of Goffmans presentation of self and impression management were a common occurance for the continuing socialization process of the supporter identity. In addition to their own presentation of their supporter identity, other supporters and supporter team clubs have a role in the continuing of the socializaion process of the supporter identity and the preservation of the supporter culture. Goffmans theories on stigmatization occurs within the women supporters experiences with non-supporters and the police.
