Abstract [sv]

The purpose of this study was to examine how media portrays mental illness among adolescents by analyzing Swedish newspaper articles. The articles have been collected from two of Sweden's largest morning and evening newspapers, Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet. A qualitative text analysis as method was used to fulfill the purpose of the study. The study applied the framing theory that was also used to analyse the articles. The results of the analyzed articles were divided into three themes; increase and inadequate care, social media as well as education and work. According to media, these three themes was often mentioned to describe the different factors that could lead to mental illness. The important conclusions are that media portrays mental illness among adolescents as an increasing phenomenon. The newspaper articles convey information and messages that are usually based on scientific results, where some important aspects are also excluded. Mental illness among adolescents was also mentioned in discussions about political actions and lack of resources.
