Abstract [en]

The sport history of Sweden has been characterized by an ideal of amateurism, as sport has been practised for a person’s own cause. Since the law of amateurism was removed in 1967, a process of professionalization has begun in many sports, which has changed the sport both for the organizations and the performers, where football has been one of the most affected sports. This process has mostly been a part of organizations within the elite, where as it now has begun to spread to organizations outside of the elite. With this as a background this study aims to give a deeper understanding to how football organizations professionalize. To fulfil this aim, interviews has been made with five employees from different football organizations in Stockholm. This study shows that professionalization is about improving the quality within the organizations, which is a demand that has emerged from the active performers. The competition from other football organizations in the same area is also a part of this process being implemented within the organizations. To say that this process of professionalization leads to a conflict with the non-profit ideals is partly right, as it has led to that the non-profit persons has been moved to different roles within the organizations. The non-profit involvement within the organizations has, despite this, remained the same and in some cases also increased.
