Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine the relationship between youths and the police in Flemingsberg, by studying how the parties perceive each other. The empirical data has been collected with qualitative interviews with three youths living in Flemingsberg and three police officers who works in Flemingsberg. The study's theoretical starting points are based on Goffman's theory of stigma, Bauman and May’s theory of "we" and "them", as well as Weber's theory of authority. Furthermore, the conceptual starting point of the study is also presented, where the concepts segregation and suburb are described.

The study's results show a poor relationship between youths and police, which is partly based on a substandard understanding and communication between them. The interviews have also shown different perceptions when the police want to be in place to create good relations with the youths, but the youths feel that they do not live up to this when they are only visible in the area when problems arise. The youths also feel that they are discriminated in meeting with the police because of their ethnicity and that they believe that the police are abusing their authority. The police believe that they are being treated with hostility in a meeting with youths in Flemingsberg, especially when they are gathered in a group. This, in turn, has led to the creation of two separate groups. The study's conclusion shows that both the youth and the police believe that the relationship between them could be better, however, the young people consider that it is too late to build a relationship and the police experience obstacles to create a better relationship because of low police density.
