Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Over the last few years, several of studies in the social sector have been carried out. They all point out that social workers throughout Sweden are subjected to mental stress in the form of high workload and workplace threats. Furthermore, recent studies have been focusing on the social workers’ reasons and motives for quitting their employment. However, this study shows that it is equally important to also highlight why the social workers choose to stay. The purpose of this study was to investigate which factors influence the motivation of social workers, who work with financial aid in Stockholm County, despite mental stress and threats. The theoretical reference framework included Herzberg's two-factor theory, Selfdetermination Theory and Public Service Motivation. A qualitative research method has been used in order to investigate the purpose and answer the research question. Empiric data was collected using semi-structured interviews, which were supported by an interview guide. A total of 5 respondents were interviewed who worked at 3 different social offices in Stockholm County. In order to analyze the collected empiric data, a content analysis has been used. As a result, it was found that the main factor for the respondents' motivation was the selfrewarding nature of their work. They were driven by helping their clients as well as the cohesion with their colleagues.
