Note

The potential of new media as instruments and arenas for social organizing and mobilization have been broadly discussed since last decade. Opinions vary from extremely celebratory do very skeptical. In this article we problematize questions surrounding a supposed participatory culture and what forces and mechanisms contribute to the emergence of resistance and subsequent promotion and enlargement of participative democracy. From a cultural perspective, focused on the socio-political context we argue for cyber-realism instead of cyber-utopia and a more nuanced view of digital communication and its allegedly democratic features. As it is discussed here, new media can be used for both progressive and oppressive aims like older forms of media, hence the importance of understanding the role of new media within a historical perspective. It is also emphasized the importance of concepts as social capital and media literacy for the analysis of the possibilities offered by new media.
