Abstract [en]

Background: Small and medium-sized enterprises account for the majority of the companiesin Sweden. After the financial crisis, external financing has become increasingly difficult and anew phenomenon has emerged called crowdfunding. Equity crowdfunding in particular is theform that has had the strongest development rate in Sweden since 2012 and is a financialmethod exchanging capital for company shares. In Sweden, the largest platform for equitycrowdfunding is FundedByMe and has been responsible for financing over 100 companieswith a total amount of more than SEK 300 million.

Problem: It has become more difficult for companies to obtain corporate finance and amodern form of equity crowdfunding has emerged in recent years. This has been studied inother countries to see how many companies that managed to put together a fully fundedcampaign. Subsequently, through financial data and statistics, a result has emerged. This hasbeen studied in the US and other countries in Europe, but there are very few studies on equitycrowdfunding done in Sweden.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the Swedish companies that have beenfully financed through the equity crowdfunding platform FundedByMe and take into accounttheir financial development based on relevant key figures.

Method: A quantitative study which includes all 106 companies financed between the years2013-2018 have been examined by a survey. A less but more concentrated group ofcompanies between the years 2013-2016 have been studied through their crowdfundingcampaigns and all their annual reports have been analyzed until the end of 2018.

Conclusion: The majority of companies that seek funding through FundedByMe arecompanies providing services, companies that have a negative net income and a higherleverage ratio than the median in their own industry.
