Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to analyse and deepen the understanding about the witch trial in Torsåker, Ångermanland, 1674 through a gender perspective by studying the protocol from the first local trial (tingsrätt). The four different elements to understand how gender works by Joan Scott is used to analyse the protocol from one of the biggest witchtrial in the history of Sweden that included 76 people accused of witchcraft. These elements are cultural symbols, normative discourse, society/polity and subject identity.  The main focus of this essay is the women who are accused of witchcraft and how the process was directed on them, based on their gender. 67 out of 76 people were women, 9 men were accused and 6 out of them were sons of accused women who were all freed from the death penalty in the end. The essay explore the statistics of the accused, the witnesses that testified against them, what the accusations were about, how they were similar and different for men and women, how the sexual accusations were used only against women, how women were accused through generations and the final death sentences.  The study is time chronological, thematic and cross thematic with a presentation of the accused, the way of the trial and final sentences as a ground structure. The middle part about the trial is thematic and there is a cross combinations of some of the themes that are explored throughout the essay as they cannot be separated.
