Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to examine how educators think about the work with autistic children in preschool. The study looks closely at issues such as how educators respond to children with an autistic diagnosis, asking what should educators take in account when they meet children with autism? Which educational methods are provided for children with autism in preschool? As the starting point of this essay the methodology consists of a qualitative approach focused substantially on interviews. Eric Schopler's treatment and support program TEACCH that stands for, Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication handicapped Children, has been crucial to this study because it is an internationally recognized support program for people of different ages with autism disorders. Theory of Mind used as a central base to this research deals with the ability to think about someone else's thoughts, to be able to have a notion that other people think and feel different than what one thinks and feels. The main topics discussed in this study are Theory of Mind, TEACCH, different perception, environment and visual scheme. The conclusion ultimately is that Theory of Mind goes in hand with the implemented methods that the educators present based on the interviews.
