Abstract [en]

This is an empirical field study of focusing on the play and interplay between the youngest children in preschool. The purpose of the study is to highlight what happens between the young children in preschool when they interact with each other. How do young children seek contact with each other and what do they play with each other? How do young children seek support from adults? These are questions I will try to answer here.

I have chosen to do a qualitative field study from a socio-cultural perspective. The gathering of information has been made by participatory observations, filming and field notes. I have chosen to limit the environment to the sandbox in order to focus on the youngest children.

My results show that imitation is a big part of children’s play and interplay. They imitate each other to make contact and the imitation follows into the play. Playing outdoors in the sandbox had proven to be a good way for the younger children to have good interplay. Conflicts rarely arise unlike indoors where both material and space are limited. My results are consistent with previous research.
