Title [sv]
Frysta tillgångar: En intersektionell studie av genus, äggbanker och reproduktivt åldrande
Title [en]
Frozen Assets: An Intersectional Study on Gender, Egg Banking and Reproductive Ageing
Abstract [sv]
Earlier this year it was announced that the first ever Nordic IVF-child that was conceived by way of a new technology of egg freezing had been born in Sweden. This new technology opens up for for an array of medical and social possibilities, from making it possible for women affected by cancer to retrieve and save eggs before undergoing treatment that might cause infertility (medical egg freezing), to creating chances for women to freeze their eggs with the purpose of delaying reproduction (social egg freezing). The aim of this project is to investigate the cultural and political significance of egg banking and so called social egg freezing from a feminist intersectional perspective. In particular, the project seeks to explore the effects that egg freezing and egg banking has for the real and imagined possibilities to delay reproduction, and how this affects the ways in which we understand women´s reproductive ageing, as well as the implications this development might have for cultural ideals and political debates on gender, age and reproduction more generally. To investigate egg freezing/egg banking as a site in which norms concerning femininity and reproductive age is produced, negotiated, challenged and materialised, I work with a triangulation of qualitative methods (interviews, media analysis, ethnographic observations).
