FIIP: Literacy and education at the workplace: The use of Swedish as a second language within the Swedish workplace
Abstract [sv]
This project aims to study the workplace reading and writing practices of workers whose first language is not Swedish. It starts from the premise that the introduction of new technologies and new structures in workplaces has an impact on the literacy and communicative demands placed upon workers and thus risks the marginalisation of those who have insufficient knowledge of the Swedish language. The research is conducted by examining texts and practices that appear to play a significant role at the workplace. Focus is also given on the construction of workers identities, shaped as a result of their literacy practices. Finally, the project examines literacy education at the workplace, with the aim to compare the actual literacy needs in the workplace with the content of literacy seminars provided to workers and to offer suggestions for better linkage of the two. The project adopts an ethnographic approach to research, by employing methods of participant observation, qualitative interviews, photography and document collection. The study is carried out in a branch of the Volvo industry. Preliminary research has shown that workers often meet difficulties when using certain texts and they are sometimes reluctant to ask for clarifications. This situation has an impact upon their performance, but also upon their self-evaluation as individuals and as professionals. This project is of great significance as it examines the impact of new socio-economic structures upon the Swedish workplace, by showing the increasing literacy demands within the world of work and the impact this has on those workers who use Swedish as a second language. It also shows the importance of linking workplace education with real-life workplace situations and provides an example of how this can be achieved.
