Title [sv]
Misstro, glädje, nyfikenhet. Attityder och förhållningssätt till transnationell ambulerande underhållning i Östersjöregionen, 1780-1880
Title [en]
Distrust, joy, curiosity. Attitudes towards travelling entertainment in the Baltic region, 1780-1880
Abstract [en]
This project examines local attitudes to travelling popular entertainment in the Baltic region 1780–1880. The purpose is to study the transnational flow of people, objects and thoughts which travelling entertainment meant in relation to local conceptions of societal order, using three heuristic, comprehensive attitudes: distrust, joy and curiosity. The project studies these attitudes on a discursive level through an analysis of a network of social relations, between 1) the resident small town population, which was both consumers of entertainment and suppliers of infrastructure and space for the entertainers, 2) the resident countryside population, which was short term visiting consumers of entertainment, 3) the entertainers themselves, and 4) local administrations and elites, with the task (sometimes self-assumed) to control the entertainment and maintain order. Our theoretical starting-points are taken from two lines of research: firstly, from research on cultural history on how societal order is produced continually through discursive and social practices, and secondly from research on social history on vagrant elements conceived as societal anomalies – deviating individuals whose vagrant characteristics carried tendencies of disorder and societal dissolution. The general aim of the project is thus to generate new knowledge and theoretical insights on the relation between conceived orders of society and transnational flows of people, objects and thoughts.

Abstract [en]

Summary: In the 1840s, Sweden and Finland were hit by a minor craze for living pictures or tableaux vivants as commercial entertainment. For the price of a ticket, the public could experience the staging, by live actors, of work of arts from antiquity and contemporary sculptors such as Canova and Thorvaldsen. Making strong claims of artistic value, based on the aesthetic theory of Winckelmann and the artistic practice of artists such as Canova, the performances raise interesting questions of how aesthetics worked when set in a commercial framework. The article discusses the problem of beauty faced by entertainers and spectators when art was reenacted for money. The experience of beauty was central to aesthetic theory and to living pictures. However, it remains unclear whether commercial living pictures was about beauty in art or about good-looking women. A possible conclusion is that it was about both, and that the aesthetic theory behind the tableaux was a theory created for a male visual culture, in which the male gaze’s consumption of female bodies was self-evident while dressed in arguments of truth and beauty, confirming a social order in which a certain right look was ascribed to men.
