Hot och våld på socialtjänsten: En kvalitativ studie om hur socialsekreterares fritid- och arbetssituation påverkas av hot och våld i arbetet2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to answer how social workers conceptualize the risk of violence in their workplace. The data consisted of seven interviews with social workers working in financial aid departments in or around the Stockholm area. Semi structured interviews were used to gather the data which then were processed with a fenomenographic method. The data was analyzed with Lazarus and Folkman theory on coping and Antonovsky’s generalized resistance resources. The findings in this study shows that all respondents have experienced threats or violence in some form in their work. They use strategies to cope with both the situation at hand and the emotions connected to the event. The respondents were affected in their spare time to some extent. It will be argued that there is a form of duality between to not accept violence and at the same time have understanding for client’s vulnerable situation and for the effect social workers decision-making have on the client’s lives.

70 år av judefientlighet i Palestina: En studie av antisemitismen i Hamas politik och ideologi i Israel- Palestinakonflikten2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

When children start preschool, it can be a big change for the whole family and for many children the first big separation in life. The first meeting of preschool takes place through introduction.

In Sweden today, there are mainly two models of introduction that are being practiced - traditional introduction and parental-active introduction. Child introduction to preschool is an underdeveloped area where the views today differ among educators and researchers and a medial debate is ongoing about the pros and cons of the models. The purpose of the study was to investigate how educators perceive the different schooling models. The survey has been conducted using qualitative interviews of five educators working at different preschools. The analysis focused on the perceptions of the educators about the different education models, how they relate to them, and what the educators consider to be the most important aspect of in-school education. The result shows that the choice of education model and performance looks different at preschools. My interpretation is that the choice of education model is not based on research but on the educators' experience of the different models and that the goal of education is to be based on each child and family in order to be able to personalize the education as far as possible in the business. The study contributes to a broader understanding of how the education models are practiced in different activities, as well as the educators' perception and experience about these.

    Abstract [en]

This essay is about how educators´ stress and short-term solutions affect the children and the preschool activities. By using a hermeneutic research approach, I have tried to get a new understanding based on the pre-understanding I already have. Most importantly, I have used Hans-Georg Gadamer's hermeneutic. The purpose of the paper is to show how preschool teachers´ stress affects the children in preschool and the function of preschool, by showing how to create an understanding of how to work differently. What do you need, as a preschool teacher, to bring into the preschool?

My story is about three different situations where short-term solutions and stress are factors. One situation is a meeting, the other is a regular day at preschool and the third is about communication between colleagues and communication between coworkers and boss.

                          My questions are:

    • How do the educator´s stress and short-term solutions affect the preschool's activities?
    • In what way are the children in the preschool affected by the educator´s stress and short-term solutions?

As people react differently to stress and stressors, there is no miracle "cure" of the situations. In my essay, I have therefore discussed the rights of employees as well as the duties of the employer.

What I have concluded is that preschool teachers´ stress and short-term solutions affect children and the preschool indirectly. Because other factors, such as meetings and staff shortages, hinder the activities, the children are indirectly affected. This is because the pedagogue is less present and more easily irritated due to social and organizational factors. This, in turn, affects the children indirectly by preventing the pedagogue from doing a satisfactory job.

Female Livelihoods And Perceived Risks Near The Betwa River: A minor field study in Mandideep, Madhya Pradesh, India2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

There is enough freshwater on the planet to ensure clean and accessible water for every human being. Despite this fact, water scarcity is a global problem affecting the livelihoods of people everywhere. This paradox can be seen in India. The country has a vast source of water through their many rivers and lakes. Nevertheless, it battles with issues regarding water scarcity and sanitation. Groundwater and rivers are polluted to a high extent and known contaminators are both human waste and industrial effluents. In Mandideep municipality, located in Madhya Pradesh, India, industrial effluents and sewage waste is dumped into the Betwa river which is heavily polluted as a result. These premises lay the foundation for this minor field study whichlooks at women’s wellbeing and capabilities through the lens of ecofeminism and the sustainable livelihood approach. Four villages, in close proximity to the river, are subject of investigation with the aim to understand the female perception of the Betwa river and whetherthe water quality impacts women’s livelihood strategies or not. During the field study, 21 women in these villages have been interviewed. The study concludes that the women’spossibilities are directly connected to environmental wellbeing where the continued undermining of natural resources reduces their capability to obtain sustainable livelihoods. The level of interaction with the river depends on the geographic position of the villages and its proximity to industrial belt of Mandideep.

    Abstract [en]

In my scientific essay, I describe self-experienced situations that deal with four children in preschool and the educators' actions. The stories are at first sight about educators' relationship building and relationship skills and whether they succeed or fail to respond to the child's needs and feelings. In a relational perspective, the first research question is addressed, how the educator can meet the child to build a good and professional relationship. The relational perspective focuses on the encounter between educator and child, with concepts such as relationship building, relationship skills, the child's perspective, safe relationships; from the docent Emilson, Professor Frelin, family therapists Juul & Jensen, child researcher Johansson and Professor Aspelin and American Professors McNally & Slutsky.

I broaden my sight with the second research question, how the educator can understand and meet the other's otherness. Through a hermeneutic perspective, I seek to understand and meet the otherness each person possesses and how this affects the encounter between the educators as well as between educators and children. I reflect on my own and others' actions. I visualize how assumptions of the child and my construction of educators, can affect my understanding of and the encounter with the other. Policeman Heder deal with the profession as responsible for an empathetic encounter. The philosopher Gadamer and his concept horizon of understanding, is used consistently, with the concept otherness. PhD Bjervås, and the docent Emilson contribute to a further understanding of the otherness, through different assumptions of the child. Furthermore, I reflect on my construction of the other as well as my responsibility in the know-how, with the help of docents Hjertström Lappalainen & Schwarz.

The purpose of the essay, is to problematize preschool as a complex arena of encounters, with relationships, experiences, otherness and assumptions, which I aim to make visible with my perspectives and research questions. The concept horizon of understanding and the encounter with the otherness, has given me a broader view of my future know-how. The method has been my essay writing, my story, reflection on the experience, the theoretical framework, mentor conversation and a writing group’s reflections. The research method has been enriching as my practical knowledge has been problematized and can thus be developed.

"Det kan ju inte vara precis detsamma med en flicka": Mumindalen ur ett queerperspektiv2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The essay examines the presence of queer desires and characters in Tove Jansson's books about the Moomins, mainly with a focus on: Finn Family Moomintroll (Trollkarlens hatt, 1948), Moominsummer Madness (Farlig midsommar, 1954) and Tales from Moominvalley (Det osynliga barnet, 1962). These three books are examined one by one and in chronological order, so as to be able to find whether the presence and character of queer representation changes over time. The idea is that this work should fill a gap in the research by exploring norm defying sexuality, gender identity and gender expression, since the books about the Moomins previously have been analyzed through a heteronormative perspective. The result shows that the books frequently feature queer relationships and characters, but also that the nuclear family and heteronormative ideas are maintained and upheld by the Moomin family.

Gränssnittets makt: En studie av användares upplevelse av rapporteringsfunktionen på sociala medier2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Technology is increasingly becoming a natural part of our everyday lives, and in addition to this the research field of interaction design becomes increasingly more important. Design, usability and user experience shape how we now communicate with each other, which today mainly happen through social media. This puts social media platforms in a powerful position. Previous studies show how social media can be a user-controlled space for identity development, but also a place for suppression techniques and harassment, filtered through a user interface. In this essay, qualitative research methods are used to examine how power can be expressed in the process of reporting inappropriate content on social media, what the user experience can look like and what themes are present in the course of events. A thematic analysis with material from observations as well as in-depth interviews resulted in six different themes: feedback, recognition, reporting categorization, the user ́s will to be understood, the responsibility question and when something cannot be reported. These themes were then compared to theories about power and empowerment, user experience and the technology as a subject. This resulted in the notion that the power of a user interface can be expressed in many different ways, and that it is important to take the user experience into account during the design process.

S(mothering) the subject formation in Jamaica Kincaid ́s Annie John: Female subject formation in postcolonial Caribbean fiction2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay investigates Jamaica Kincaid´s the book Annie John (1985) and its protagonist Annie John´s search for a coherent self-and/or a de-colonized identity through a subject transformation. Using postcolonial feminism, including theorists such as Homi K. Bhabha and Stuart Hall, I suggest that the protagonist Annie John does not perform a subject transformation as she is unable to embrace the state of hybridity needed to perform such a transformation. Annie John is a colonial subject drawn to the two worlds in which she resided, the East and West- and cannot create herself in the presence of them both. I conclude that Annie John´s mother, under the influence of colonialism and patriarchy, is part reason as to why Annie John is unable to perform this transformation. With the help of postcolonial feminism, I find that as Annie John cannot recover her mother from this double oppression of colonialism and patriarchy. The conclusion of this essay proposes that the protagonist Annie John does not manage to create a subject formation as she is not able to reside in a state of hybridity between her own culture and that of her colonizer.

    Abstract [en]

Co-morbidity in the form of mental health problems and an addiction has become increasingly noticeable and commonplace, which places higher demands than ever on a functioning collaboration or integration between psychiatric- and addiction care amongst open care. The purpose of this study, in addition to highlighting the perceived scope of co-morbidity, is to identify existing collaboration and improvement areas through qualitative interviews with professionals from two different organizations within the two care areas. In addition, the purpose is also to see how staff within the two activities relate to what it means for clients and patients to be diagnosed with two stigmatized diagnoses. The theoretical frame of reference this study uses is the theory of collaboration and Goffman's theory of stigma, as well as previous research that concerns collaboration and co-morbidity. The data consists of four semi-structured interviews with professionals in the two care areas in a selected municipality. The result shows that all respondents perceive co-morbidity as widespread and extensive, and that the collaboration is appreciated and desirable - but requires both the motivation and the will of the staff to function effectively. Furthermore, the results show that it is primarily in addiction care to work actively and explicitly to de-stigmatize the individual and liberate it from shame and guilt, even if the actor within psychiatric care also considers itself to be relatively de-stigmatized.

Konstruktioner av "Kina" genom typografi: En analys av exotypsnitt och filmaffischen Charlie Chan i Kina (1935)2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay examines a typeface used for Roman letters meant to connote ”China” as an exotic and foreign place, within Swedish visual culture history. I examine this typeface using Swedish film posters by Eric Rohman (1891-1949) from the Charlie Chan-series from the years 1934-1940, focusing on the poster Charlie Chan i Kina (1935). The purpose is to examine constructions of ”the Chinese” and ”China” in these posters, and how this specific typeface has been used in these depictions as well as been constructed in relation to these ideas. Through a semiotic model for image analysis and the appliance of postcolonial studies, critical race theory and visual culture studies, I arrive at several conclusions. By imitating Chinese calligraphic visual elements, the typeface in Charlie Chan i Kina has the ability to connote ”China” as an exotic, traditional and foreign place, for a white Swedish audience. The analysis discusses the semiotic functions of the typeface in relation to contexts of the film poster, Swedish visual culture history and discourses concerning race in Sweden.

Den berättande texten: En narratologisk studie av Toni Morrisons Beloved2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay is a close-reading study of Toni Morrison's novel Beloved. The purpose of this essay is to investigate and describe Gérard Genette's narratological theories and their function in the novel when looking at how the story is told. The questions that are being answered are how flashbacks actually affect the chronological order of events and who the narrator is that’s telling the story. The methods that are being used in the report are a close-reading of Beloved and making a selection of previous research. The selected research will show an overview of some examples of areas and theories that has been used in other essays. In the summary it appears from the result of the analysis that flashbacks functions as explanations of the characters' thoughts or actions in the present and that the narrator most of the time is the character that is in a particular situation.

Genom våra ögon: En komparativ litteraturanalys av Margaret Atwoods The Handmaid’s Tale och Octavia E. Butlers Kindred, utifrån forskningsfältet kulturella minnesstudier2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay’s primarily focus is on the common discourse about the persisting effects of the past in the present in Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale(1985)and Octavia E. Butler’s Kindred (1979).These novels are the testimonies of the protagonists Offred and Dana who shares their experience of traumatic violence and oppression. Dana, with her ability to time travel, will see her present time in clearer light as she experiences the life of a slave on an antebellum plantation. Offred, the Handmaiden owned by the totalitarian regime Gilead, portrays her contemporary life in parallel to remembering her former and thus describing Gilead’s increasing authority. Based on different theorists and concepts in the field of cultural memory studies, this essay examines the tension between memory and history, the distantness towards the past and the problematics with representations of traumatic events. As I argue that the voices of Dana and Offred calls attention to the importance of perspective and of sharing stories, they are also an act of hope, therapy and resistance; an act that also make possible a critique of the processes of the production of historical knowledge.

Hur skapas tillit mellan användare och värdar vid användandet av tjänster i delningsekonomin?: En kvalitativ studie om hur Airbnbs värdar och användare skapar tilliten mellan varandra.2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to study trust between Airbnb hosts and users. The complexity of the sharing economy lies in the fact that it lacks formal contracts and laws that support the private individuals included in an agreement. This type of economy is not in complete absence of laws. But laws that usually apply outside the sharing economy are not supported in this type of organizational form. Then the problem arises, when trust must be created between each other, since there are no laws to lean on disputes, fraud etc. not only that the sharing economy is characterized by uncertainty, the booking takes place digitally, which contributes with even greater uncertainty. The actors are forced to find ways to create security in the form of trust. The authors of the study have therefore investigated how Airbnbs' hosts and users create trust between each other. The study was based on a qualitative research method in the form of twelve semi-structured telephone interviews. The study's theoretical frame of reference consisted of previous research on the sharing economy, trust in the sharing economy and peer-to-peer asset sharing. The result was that respondents using the feedback system consisting of reviews and reviews and the person's profile create an idea of the person and then get their own impression when they have a conversation with the person. Communication, feedback system and profile are thus the three ways that give an impression that further shapes and creates trust between users and hosts on Airbnb.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this esseay is to analyse the configuration of the literary child in Henning Mankells Comedia Infantil and Harry Martinssons Flowering Nettle. The teoretical outset is interdisciplinary, informed by both literarystudies and childstudies adopting a psycho-social perspective which allows a reading of the childprotagonists inside as well as outside preconditions and how these are constructed in the texts. The narratological concepts of focalization is used to investigate in detail how the narrator and narrative constructs a childperspectiveand conception of childhood. A point of interest is also to examine how the novels relate to the idea of the innocent or/and the competent child.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to illustrate the conceptions of the purpose of preschool education that is discursively constructed in the new Läroplanen för förskolan (2018) (the Preschool Curriculum). The study also included examining which discursive battles that are visible in the material and further, which discourse is in a hegemonic position. The theoretical basis is Biestas (2011) three educational functions: qualification, socialization and subjectification. Methodological inspiration is retrieved from Faircloughs (1992) critical discourse analysis where the concepts of intertextuality, interdiscursivity and modality have been used to analyze how discourses emerged and how they are presented. The material included in the analysis was Läroplanen för förskolan (2018) which has been analyzed in relation to: Starting strong III (OECD 2013), Uppdrag om en översyn av läroplanen för förskolan (Regeringen 2017), Förskolans kvalitet och måluppfyllelse (Skolinspektionen 2018) and Läroplanen för förskolan (2016). The analysis led to identification of four discourses; the Edu(Care) discourse, the future-oriented discourse, the democratic discourse and the cultivation discourse. All discourses articulates the desired purpose of the preschool education in different ways. The result shows that, among other things, the hegemonic discourse is that of Edu(Care), where emphasis is primarily on learning. Otherwise, discourses are mostly forward-looking and aim at what is to be achieved in the future. Even children's curiosity and creativity is presented as the basis of an expected development of the child.

The main reason for this study has been to explore the healthcare professionals' perception of the hospital social workers role in emergency care. The main questions have dealt with how the hospital social worker is perceived and why that perception may be the case. The study is a qualitative study done by interviewing and observing. The interviews were conducted at several emergency care departments in Sweden. Three doctors, three nurses and three assistant nurses were interviewed. The interviewers' answers were then coded according to Grounded theory where the result emerged according to the respondents main concern. The main concern of the study resulted in the concept of accessibility. This was then analyzed trough KAIMeR which was the theoretical model. Helping to create an understanding of how accessibility could be so influential. This was further analyzed by role theory in order to be able to explain how accessibility could affect the care personnel's perception of the hospital social worker. The conclusion of the study was that accessibility constituted the summarized perception of the hospital social worker. Analyzed through KAIMeR we recognizedaccessibility as a parameter that could change outcome. Applying role theory we saw inter-role conflicts that negatively affected collaboration.

Surebets - En riskfri investering?: En studie om riskbeteende och arbitrageutnyttjande på oddsmarknaden2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate individuals' risk behavior during investments and to gain a deeper understanding of arbitrage and the unsystematic risk involved when an individual uses arbitrage opportunities. To investigate this a delimitation has been made to the odds market and the risk-free utilization of arbitrage in the form of Surebets. The method used to investigate this has been a qualitative and quantitative method in the form of a triangulation. Through a survey and interviews, a causal relationship could identify behavioral fluctuations in individuals when it comes to profit and loss cases. An Eta2 test was conducted and demonstrated a connection between individuals' risk behaviour and the knowledge of Surebets. The study found several unsystematic risks for users linked to Surebets, where the largest are the gaming companies and its user agreement. Finally, the null hypothesis can be rejected by means of the Eta2 test and a causal relationship, which proves a higher risk taking among individuals exploiting arbitrage opportunities on the odds market.

    Abstract [en]

The gaming industry is a multimillion-dollar industry that is male dominated. The games contain mostly male protagonists and the few female protagonists that makes it to the shelves are met with criticism from the players. I have taken an interest in how the protagonists are portrayed by reviewers. For example, when it comes to age and use of name, if there is any difference between genders and if there is any kind of discrimination like sexualizing in the text. In this study, I use critical discourse analysis to study game review articles of six different games, three with female protagonists and three with male protagonists. The reviews are from two different gaming magazines. The results are that the protagonists are rarely represented as the stereotypical hero to the readers and there is not a big difference between genders. An observation is that the male protagonists are described and depicted as ideal men that are supposed to be aggressive, violent and dominant. The female protagonists are described with similar traits as the male protagonists. The conclusion is that the female protagonists are fitted into the stereotypical main character role. This role is built up by hard traits where softer traits like passive, pacifistic and submissive, which are more considered stereotypically female, is absent from main protagonists.

    Abstract [en]

My intention with this essay is to analyze how lesbianism is described in Swedish youth literature. I have done a queer reading of three books written in the 2000’s to find out if lesbian love is described as a problem, and if it isn’t: what it causing problems in the novels? When reading the novels I have also observed how the environment and the characters themselves perceive lesbian identity. The novels I have chosen are Det händer nu by Sofia Nordin (2010), Som eld by Sara Lövestam (2015) and Du och jag, Marie Curie by Annika Ruth Persson (2003). To apply queer theory I have used several concepts, such as heteronormativity, coming out, shame and internalized homophobia, when analyzing the texts.

The conclusion of my analysis is that one of the novels describes the lesbian love itself as a problem, while the other two are wider in their descriptions. Some characters are comfortable in their lesbian identity, while some are struggling with shame and coming out-issues. My final conclusion is that it is heteronormativity that is causing problems in the novels, not lesbianism.

New Public Management i svenska förskolor: En kvalitativ studie om hur förskollärare arbetar och därmed ser på arbetssituationen på kommunala förskolor jämfört med privata förskolor2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate if preschool teachers work and experience the work situation in the same way in private preschools compared to municipal preschools in Stockholm County. A qualitative method was used to accomplish the study, where semistructured interviews were used to gather data, in the form of semi-structured interviews. The previous theories and previous research this study is based on has shown that the public sector has started to imitate the private sector, and the reforms that the school has undergone in recent decades are called New Public Management (NPM). The results of the study indicate that when it comes to administrative work and documentation, the difference between the way private and municipal preschools work is different. Municipal preschools works with documentation more thank private preschools does. The study also showed that preschool teachers at both private and municipal preschools work quite similarly when it comes to how resources are used. However, the municipal pre-schools worked more in a goal-oriented and result-oriented manner than the private preschools. The conclusion in the study pointed out that, despite some differences in how they work, all preschool teachers who were interviewed in this study experienced that their work situation was good in broad terms as it is today. No major changes were desired.

Onlineplattformars och sociala mediers påverkan på journalistrollen: En kvalitativ intervjustudie med fem yrkesverksamma journalister2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose is to examine the predictability of Byström's market-based model on the Swedish market and compare it with the classic accounting-based Ohlson's logical model.

The study uses a quantitative method for gathering data and the results from the models were analyzed by using the CAP-curve and AR to be able to compare the accuracy of the two different models. Type 1 and Type 2 errors have been defined as two categorization measures to distinguish two types of errors that the models can exhibit.

The result showed that both Byström and Ohlson's calculated high degree of Type 1 error and a few of Type 2 errors. In comparison with each other, Byström's market-based model have a better accuracy than Ohlson's model according toCAP-curve. If the models applied in more than 1 year before the bankruptcy, both models shows a result that is not reliable with a low accuracy.

Kraftens biologi: En läsning av Hegels ”Kraft och förstånd” utifrån Leibniz organiska världsbild2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This work seeks to trace the influence of G.W. Leibniz on G.W.F. Hegel and the chapter called ‘Force and the Understanding’ in his Phänomenologie des Geistes. Using Leibniz’s theory of forces developed in texts such as Specimen Dynamicum, in which Leibniz argues against the Cartesians in favour of a ‘dynamic’ view on substances, it is here argued that the notion of biological life is of crucial importance for understanding Hegel’s transition from Consciousness to Self-Consciousness at the end of ‘Force and the Understanding’. For Leibniz, force is posited as that which gives unity to the monad, and this by functioning as their inner source of activity. This infusion of activity into the monad gives rise both to the physical world of bodies, as well as to the mental world of consciousnesses. Leibniz also sees force in direct analogy with biological life, as they share one characteristic feature, namely the capacity for ‘perception’ and ‘desire’. Consequently, organic life is for Leibniz what is most real in the world, uniting all bodies with a conscious soul. This move, I argue, is essential for understanding Hegel in ‘Force and the Understanding. More specifically, when Hegel’s consciousness discovers that, through the dialectic of force and law, organic life has become its new object, it also realizes that its faculty of the Understanding [Verstand] is related to its very own biological nature. The outer world of appearance, consciousness realizes, is thereby intimately connected to the inner of things, the so called supersensible world. Hegel thus regards consciousness of biological life as a sort of bridge that unites the Understanding with the concept, or rather, unites internal thinking with the outside world. This gives rise to Consciousness’ awareness of its own thinking, which is equivalent to it becoming a Self-consciousness.

Att ordna vardagslivet: Statens konstruktion av hushållet 1911–19512018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to show how the construction of the household as a political entity was undertaken by the Swedish state during the first half of the 1900. The household, mainly perceived as an apolitical subject, is shown to be articulated in response to the problems and ideals as formulated by the ruling body at the time.

The thesis examines the period of 1911-1951, generally considered a time of great social upheaval in Sweden. The countries transition from a poor agrarian society to one of the richest countries in the world, drastically changed the perception of what a household was, and what it needed to be. By studying the material produced by Socialstyrelsen between 1913-1951 to examine the budget of different social classes, the thesis finds that the household has been formulated in different ways by the state. In the early years of the 20:th century, the household was articulated as” the frugal household” by the newly formed social authority. It was conceived as a unit for fulfilling the needs of its consistent members.

The thesis shows the articulation of this particular idea of the household was an answer to the social problems formulated by the state of the time. The construction of” the frugal household” did not only formulate the thrifty housekeeping ideals of the time, but also became a way to educate the lower classes, whose economic troubles where seen mostly as a lack of self-restraint and good book keeping.

As the perceived challenges to the state changed, so too did the use of the household. As the economy expanded ever further down the path of the consumption-driven welfare state, so too did the states idea of what a household was. This thesis shows how the latter use of the household concept is articulated as a unit for consumption. The frugal ideal has grown into a celebrated desire to improve one’s situation through consumption. Furthermore, both these constructions of the household serve to reproduce the core values of the state, as well as the core population of the state.

Därför funderar mer än hälften av journalisterna på att byta yrke: En kvantitativ och kvalitativ studie av den psykosociala arbetsmiljön på Sörmlands Media2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This thesis focus on Haparanda's historical identity by analyzing 14 public sculptures in Haparanda. The aim is to present a representative picture of the public sculptures and to analyse its historical connection to Haparanda in realtion to a urban view of Haparanda's architecture.

The first chapter adresses the question of power and identity formation. The second chapter discusses the role of sculptures in the collective view of a particular environment. In the concluding third chapter the sculptures are discussed in relation to the history of the city of Haparanda.

The conclustion of my thesis suggests that the sculptures are well connected to the history of Haparanda and its close relation to the twin city of Torneå (Finland). It is a story closely connected to Finlands history.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine how elderly with mental illness is assured help and support within the municipal elderly care in Stockholm. The aim was further on to receive an increased understanding of the social workers professional role and experiences in their work regarding elderly with mental illness. The empirical data has been obtained through group-and individual interviews with social workers operative within the elderly care in Stockholm, in addition to a qualitative text analysis. Based on the study's theoretical concepts: grass-roots bureaucracy, discretion and the principle of normalisation, the empirics has been analysed. The result indicates a deficiency of resources, a lack of knowledge regarding mental illness amongst the elderly, in addition to mental illness being difficult to define. Further on, aspects of restricted discretion and a lack of the normalization principle are described, which depictures that needs of the elderly individuals are set in relation to standardised efforts and resource priorities. To conclude, a reflection about how the municipal elderly care and its aim possibly would have altered if the principle of normalisation was implemented and based upon a model of rights.

    Abstract [en]

Today, visitors use social media before, during and after travels to share, create and discuss content with others. This means that the visitor industry needs to profile themselves on social media to communicate their services toward their visitors. Parallel to this development, a creative tourist class has been emerging. This group demands new experiences that differs from a previous more conventional tourism, which is spreading among the public and is marketed more often on social media. This study analyze how the visitor industry experience the digital visitor and the new creative tourist class in Stockholm Archipelago. The result of the study shows that social media is a tool, which allows the people working in the visitor industry to multitask because they can bring it anywhere. Due to the digital visitors high interactivity online, the visitor industry are being challenged on both resources and knowledge. It is also shows that it makes it possible for smaller businesses to market themselves globally and easily reach their target group in a profitable way.

THAT'S THE WAY IT IS: En undersökning av faktagranskningsprojektet faktiskt.se2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

I analysen resoneras kring resultaten främst utifrån Michael Schudsons Discovering the News (1978).

Finansiell Bootstrapping: En flermetodsforskning inom ämnet Bootstrapping och dess tillämpande bland medel-stora till stora bolag2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this investigative thesis was to further study the use of financial bootstrapping in medium to large sized enterprises. The thesis furthermore aimed to investigate if there are any prerequisite bootstrapping methods used in correlation to annual turnover, industry as well as to conduct research to whether enterprises are aware of their current use of financial bootstrapping. The study can conclude that financial bootstrapping is used among medium to large sized enterprises. Furthermore, the study can also conclude that there exists a correlation between desired bootstrapping methods used and annual turnover. A correlation to the current lifecycle phase currently presided in, in regard to a specific financial bootstrapping method used could not be solely concluded as well as industry-based preferences in regards to specific bootstrapping methods could not be established. The thesis overall conclusion is that further research is needed to conclude if there exist any industry-based preferences towards usage of specific bootstrapping methods, as well as further research should be aware of problems this study has identified in order to better prepare future study in the aimed field.

Jakten på engagemang på Facebook: Skillnader och likheter i gestaltning mellan morgon- och kvällspress2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This chapter hypothesises that there is a trend of centralisation in government communication – a move upwards in the political executive towards central coordination and control. We test this argument empirically through an inventory of elite interview evidence and a four-country comparison including two case studies – Finland and Sweden – as well as two case illustrations – Lithuania and Poland. Based on, altogether, over 80 interviews with political journalists and political/media advisors or press secretaries in the four countries, the chapter analyses how government communication is structured. The cases of Finland and Sweden offer support for the centralisation hypothesis while those of Lithuania and Poland point out its limitations. We thus conclude that the extent to which government communication is centralised varies across contexts and that the variation is patterned.

    Abstract [en]

This chapter explores political executive-media relations in Sweden, with a particular focus on professional day-to-day relationships and habits. The analysis is mainly based on extensive interviews with journalists and government press secretaries, and it establishes the routinisation at work, as well as the professionalisation. The exchanges between journalists and their sources appear to be close but with recognition of each other’s professional roles. Media developments influence the relationship, and the downsizing of newsrooms, multi-platform production 24/7 and increased competition for unique news have made journalists more dependent on available sources. At the same time, professionalisation of government communication makes news management more efficient and has centralising effects on executive systems. Together these trends shift the balance between journalists and their political sources in favour of the latter. The presented findings have important implications for research on journalism, media and political executives.

Close and Distant: Political Executive-Media Relations in Four Countries2019Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This book explores the interplay between government and media drawing on unique evidence from, and in-depth analysis of, four national cases: Finland, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden. Based on the chapters dedicated to each country, five additional chapters address the following cross-national themes: government communication, social media, formality/informality in journalist-source relations, mediatisation of politics, and political communication culture.

The book reveals what really goes on between the political executive and the media in everyday practices within these countries. First, it uncovers a process of mediated political-cultural change within media-political systems. Second, it illustrates the work- ings of prime ministerial power and communication aides at this apex of political power and the media and those who work there. Third, it examines both the struggle within governing institutions to control the flow of information and the tensions between civil servants and political aides, and takes the reader through the four media-political con- texts rooted in a deep knowledge of these relationships.

The result is an illuminating and original analysis of politics, political communication, media and journalism, and offers greater understanding of the realities of government – and democracy – and media in practice as well as the role of media within contemporary politics.

En queerteoretisk analys av maskulinitetsgörande i serien Modern Family2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The thesis purpose is to, with regards to relevant theories, explain how the variables industry affiliation, growth, uniqueness and tangiability affect modern, swedish firms capital structure.

Method: A quantitative method along with a deductive approach has been used to make this study. Multiple regression analysis has been applied in order to identify statistical relationships between various variables.

Conclusion: The empirical results can only to a certain degree confirm what the theories are claiming. The statistical relationship the growth, profitability, uniqueness in a firm has with leverage is negative. Moreover, tangibility turned out to have a positive relationship to leverage, which coincides with said theories.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish publishing company En bok för alla (which translates as “A book for everyone”) was established in 1976 following a decision in the Swedish parliament granting the right of the government to sign a cooperative agreement with the non-profit foundation Litteraturfrämjandet. Using state funds, the publishing company would publish books of high literary value to be sold at low prices over a three-year period. The purpose of this was to combat the kind of literature that was sold at supermarkets and corner shops, and which was deemed being of low literary value, but also to reach the wider public and attract non-readers.

In this study I argue that the establishment of En bok för alla must be viewed as an expression of Swedish cultural policy which took form in the early years of the 1970s. Two years prior to En bok för alla being established the Swedish parliament passed the first cultural policy act of Sweden, thus laying the groundwork for cultural policy to come. In this act, it is stated that aim of Swedish cultural policy was to contribute to a better social environment and to work for the furtherance of equality. This would be achieved by, among other things, minimizing the negative effects of commercial interests in the cultural sphere and decentralizing the production and distribution of culture.

During the 1960s and 1970s, books had become increasingly expensive and books of higher literary quality were both more difficult and more expensive than their lower quality counterparts. I argue that many looked at this as a shortcoming on the part of the above mentioned commercial interests, who valued money more than literature. I will also show how some these ambitions, bold though they may have been, in the end fell short of accomplishing the goal of En bok för alla. Though they did succeed in publishing books at low costs, the question of whether they were of high literary quality or not I can’t say, they did not seem to reach the wider audience they had hoped to attract.

Following the Swedish election of 2006 and the subsequent change of government, the state funds for En bok för alla were withdrawn in 2007. The argument given for this was that the book market had changed since 1976. This was of course true, but in my opinion the need for these high-quality dime-store books is perhaps even more acute today than ever before. In a time when smartphones, television and computers all compete for our attention, I believe that it is becoming an increasingly important task for our society to secure the role of books and reading in the world of media.

"Strong like a woman": En kritisk diskursanalys av Netflix kategori "Serier med en stark kvinnlig huvudkaraktär" utifrån ett feministiskt medieteoretiskt ramverk2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

More than 800 000 people take their own lives every year, this effects over five million people – family, friends and acquaintances. To report about this requires knowledge and careful consideration about how and what to write, therefore it is crucial to understand how journalists and news chiefs talk and think about their suicide reporting. And why they do or do not report about suicide. Therefore, four journalists and two news chiefs from two different newspapers have discussed 15 questions about their suicide reporting in group interviews at each editorial office. During these interviews it became clear that journalists and news chiefs discuss suicide reporting more often when a suicide actually happens, but seldom otherwise. This behaviour is more or less explainable in terms of social responsibility theory, news valuation theory and the theory of professionalism. Some conclusions drawn from this was that research in this area must continue and that media theories are insufficient when it comes to suicide reporting.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this scientific study is to investigate how educators interpret their democratic mission to work with the children's influence on activities they do at the preschool. The study also aims to contribute to an increased knowledge about how educators can work with children's influence at preschool. The study asks two questions: What does influence mean according to teachers? and How does the teacher create opportunities for pupils to have an influence in the activities they do at pre-school? A qualitative research method is used with a phenomenological research effort. The theoretical framework for the essay is based on five concepts: influence, child perspective, listening and communication proximal development. The results show that, according to educators, influence means for educators that the children have the opportunity to do what they want and what they are interested in. The results also shows that educators create opportunities for children to have influence by responding to them as individuals whose opinions and thoughts are taken seriously. The children may speak, be listened to and regarded as competent individuals. The children themselves can choose activities in the classroom and they take their own initiative. Teachers talks with the children and gives them space to express their thoughts and opinions.

Vem är kritiker i dag?: En jämförande studie av litteraturrecensioner i dagspress och på internet2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study has been to highlight men's experiences of their violence against their former partners. The questions that answered the purpose of the study have focused on the reasons why men tend to use violence against their partners and whether they subsequently take responsibility for their violence and if so, how this is the case. The study is of a qualitative approach and is based on five interviews with men who have been treated for their violent behavior. The theories that the study leans towards are the social psychological and sociological perspectives with a focus on social heritage and the social learning theory. The study's empirical data and the causes of the violence is also linked to the external factors of the ecological perspective, such as drugs, alcohol, economic vulnerability and crime. Other theoretical perspectives and explanatory models that are used to explain men's acts of violence against their former partner are the disfavor perspective in the individual psychological perspective, the gender power perspective and system theory explanatory models. The result of the study indicate that the causes of men's violence against women are often explained as the woman's own fault when the man often believes that the woman has provoked him to take violence. Many times, however, there are several different reasons for men's violence against women who are interwoven in several different theoretical explanatory models. Many of the men in the study still do not take responsibility for their acts of violence and do not want to identify themselves as a women abusers, even though they have been treated and in therapy for the violence against their former partner. However, some of the men in the study also found that the treatment helped them understand the causes of the violence and that they also have a responsibility as it comes to the violence they subjected their former partners to.

Att navigera i vithetens hav: En studie om judiskhet, svenskhet och passerandets gränser2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This bachelor’s thesis is an ethnological study with focus on examining conditions for and navigation between different subject positions in Swedish everyday life. The study problematizes the nature of Swedishness and examines the relationship between Swedishness, whiteness, and Jewishness. Who is Swedish and when is examined, and in which situations Jewishness is brought to light and made note of. The essay discusses the boundaries of the act of passing and what strategies Jews in Sweden use to navigate between Swedishness and Jewishness and adaptations to live as smooth a daily life as possible.

Based on the theory derived from phenomenology and post-structuralism as well as interviews with six Jews resident in Sweden, the paper highlights the complicated ways in which norms interact and how identifications arise through deviation. Whiteness is examined in relation to Jewishness and Swedishness and appears, similarly to other social positions, depending on context, time and place. The empirical evidence shows how Jews in Sweden try to pass as (white) Swedes while at the same time trying to keep their Jewish identity. That Jewish bodies act differently and feel at home dependent on place is made clear by an account of the importance of the diasporic experience for Jewish life in Sweden.

    Abstract [en]

Activism and Civic engagement on social media have been taking place since they became a part of communication takes place in people’s everyday lives (Mihailidis 2015). This thesis aims to study the new opportunities for civic engagement and activism that have arisen through the growth of digital media. This work aims to study this by specifically studying how activism surrounding disability and disabled people (disability activism) takes place on the social media platform Twitter. Since the needs of disabled people are often not a priority in the development of technology (World Health Organization 2011, s.184). In this study a mediated community of disability activists and their activity on Twitter are studied using nethnography. The observations of which are analyzed through theoretical foundations in infrastructuring (Mosconi et al. 2017), design in relation to civic engagement (Korn & Voida 2015), and the role of mediated communities in activism (Fromm 2015). The primary result of the nethnography is the observation of how the disability activists appropriated Twitter as an infrastructure for their activism, as well as three analytical categories of the activity that was observed during the field work. Based on this categorization and analysis of the activists’ user behavior the main contribution of this thesis is formulated: A description of how disability activists engage in infrastructuring of Twitter to create a platform where their mediated community can engage in online activism and civic engagement.
